Overview
The Australian Standard AS3850 Tilt-up Concrete Construction was written in 2003 and is currently being revised with a broader scope to cover both on-site cast tilt-up and off-site precast concrete. While the two methods of fabricating concrete elements have intrinsic differences they also share many similarities and commonalities in the areas of theoretical structural design, design actions, design methods, lifting, erection, bracing, fixing, materials and construction methods.
The new Standard, to be released 2012/13, will treat both tilt-up and precast as the one building commodity, namely, prefabricated concrete elements, with the method of their casting treated as an independent issue. The motivation for the change is predicated by the inherent nature and risks of lifting and securing heavy concrete building elements and the desire to make a genuine improvement to the risks and safety of the building construction industry.
Five experienced industry practitioners will present on current design, detailing and construction practice covering not only areas that are already good but also issues that are questionable and need improvement. Reference will also be made to modifications and new provisions which are being written into the new Standard.
