Topic 1 - Modern perspectives on marine corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures.

About the topic:
Existing theory and models do not accurately predict the onset of chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion when compared with observations for actual concrete structures. Anecdotal concrete structures, which have been exposed in the tidal and splash zones, for 75-85 years, have been observed to exhibit no corrosion. These observations require a re-appraisal of conventional concepts associated with ‘chloride-induced’ reinforcement corrosion. 
About the Speaker:
Rob Melchers is a Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Newcastle. He has a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and is an Honorary Fellow of The Institution of Engineers Australia. Rob has published four books, and over 350 refereed journal papers. His recent awards include the 2009 Australian Corrosion Association Corrosion Medal, the 2013 John Connell Gold Medal, and was the 2014 Eminent Speaker of the Structural College of the Institution of Engineers, Australia,
Topic 2 - Long Life Marine Concrete Structures – Some Recent Field Experiences

About the topic:
Reinforced concrete structures in marine environments can be very durable and may not suffer significant chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement even when well beyond their design lives. Condition surveys of several reinforced concrete marine structures up to 100+ years of age have revealed no significant reinforcement corrosion. This presentation looks at the mechanisms that may explain this position. An understanding of these mechanisms may result in long life, economical and durable structures.
About the speaker:
Warren Green is a Director and Principal Corrosion Engineer at Vinsi Partners and is based in Newcastle. He is a Fellow and Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineers Australia and has over 30 years of experience in corrosion engineering and materials technology covering: marine, infrastructure, civil, industrial and building structures. His latest published book is titled “Corrosion and Protection of Reinforced Concrete”.
