An inspection of the Cethana Underground Power Station in March 2013 determined that exposed sections of reinforcement elements installed throughout the complex were heavily corroded to the point where many could be considered destroyed. Work commenced in May 2014 and was completed in October 2014 by mining contractor Mancala. Pitt & Sherry with Mancala conducted installation trials on all lengths of rock bolts and cable bolts at the angles at which they were to be installed in the rockmass.  Trials were conducted by installing rock bolts and cable bolts in pipes of similar diameter and length to the boreholes in which they would be installed. The work program was undertaken and successfully completed on time and budget. The entire rehabilitation program was completed without material interruption to power generation.
Corrosion in prestressed concrete structures presents far greater challenges due to the nature of the prestressed construction, including hydrogen embrittlement, electrical continuity and general repair of elements under stressing compression.
The presentation will discuss these challenges including the benefits and methods of preventing and delaying strand corrosion and the modern methods of repair and corrosion protection of these elements. The presentation will feature Tasmanian prestressed repair projects and others from around Australasia and overseas
