The Melbourne Metro project is the most significant rail infrastructure undertaking in Victoria in 30 years. The concrete industry has had a major part to play in this with many developments and learnings. In this presentation, we will explore the technical challenges being addressed, opportunities for innovation, proposed construction methodologies and provide a construction update.

Our presenters are -

1. Adam Sharman, Technical Director, CYP Design and Construction
Adam is the Technical Director for CYP Design and Construction, the Lendlease, John Holland and Bouygues joint venture delivering the Metro Tunnel Project’s tunnel and stations PPP package. Adam was previously the Engineering Director on Westconnex Stage 2 (New M5), North West Metro in Sydney and Engineering Director on Gateway Alliance in Perth. He has also held roles in consulting and government organisations with a focus on the development and delivery of infrastructure projects.
 
2. Andrew Henry, Technical Director, AAW Design Joint Venture
Andrew Henry is the Technical Director for the AAW design joint venture (Arcadis, Arup and WSP) working with CYP Design and Construction to deliver the Metro Tunnel Project’s tunnels and stations PPP package. Andrew is a structural engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the design and construction of buildings and rail infrastructure. He has worked on metro rail lines in Sydney and Singapore and has a spread of experience across buildings and rail infrastructure projects from Australia, Singapore, Malaysia the UK and US. Andrew is a Principal in Arup’s Melbourne office.

3. Carlos Sanabria, Tunnel Lining Segment Manufacturing Facility Manager, CYP Design & Construction
Carlos is the Tunnel Lining Segment Manufacturing Manager on the Metro Tunnel Project, responsible for the production of the concrete tunnel segments required to line the Project’s twin nine-kilometre rail tunnels. With a 12 year career in civil engineering, Carlos has previously worked on the Level Crossing Removal Project – Caulfield to Dandenong, and overseas working in Venezuela, Spain and Saudi Arabia planning and managing complex construction and infrastructure projects.
 

Carlos Sanabria is the Tunnel Lining Segment Manager on the Metro Tunnel Project. Carlos will be talking about the process of manufacturing the 56,000 concrete segments needed to line the twin tunnels, including concrete mixes, curing and fire testing, together with innovation in safety and design.
