Vertical Concrete Elements - What's Holding You Up?

In October the Institute's Victoria Branch will hold its showcase event incorporating feature technical presentations, the annual student concrete competition as well as a trade exhibition.

About the Event
It comprises of three integrated parts –
1. our feature technical presentations in the main auditorium,
2. the student beam competition in Swinburne’s adjoining Advanced Technologies Centre; and
3. the tradeshow exhibition/networking area in the adjacent anti-chamber.

Student Concrete Competition
The student concrete competition is a unique experience for the next generation of engineers. This year students will test the failure load of reinforced structural concrete elements as close as possible to the collapse load and identify the critical failure mode. Teams of 2-5 student will compete for first prize. See the download for the competition question, instructions and entry form at the bottom of this page. Professor Stephen Foster (University of NSW) - Strut and Tie Modelling as Applied to Vertical Elements
Professor Foster is Head of School, Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW in Sydney. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, Honorary Member of the Concrete Institute of Australia, Honorary life member of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib), a member Australian Standards Committee BD2, Chairman of sub-committee BD2/1 “Strength”, BD2/6 “Fibre Reinforced Concrete” and BD2/9 “Geopolymer Concrete”. He is elected Deputy Chair of the Technical Council of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib).


Dr Foster has over 350 publications in the field of structural concrete, with textbooks on Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete. His main interest is in delivering of new engineered materials and technologies to practice.

Shan Kumar (Hickory)
With 35 Years of industry experience Shan is leading the innovation team at Hickory. Shan has developed several smart concrete constructions known as the Hickory Building System (HBS). He is the National president elect for the Concrete Institute of Australia.

Topic: Innovation in Building Design & How to Avoid Construction Errors
If innovation is the future of concrete construction, an understanding of what constitutes suitable building design and detail is vital, especially in relation to the success of precast walls and precast column construction. Shan Kumar will discuss the precautions we need to employ to minimise design, detail and construction errors and share some of his recent experiences on the job and provide suggestions to avoid such errors.

Rocco Carinci (Rincovitch)
As a structural engineer with over 35 years of experience in design, Rocco worked in small and large consultancies before joining Rincovitch Consultants in 1995. In 1998 he became a partner and took over as managing director in 2009.
He has designed a multitude of exciting and successful projects such as MCG Great Southern Stand, Toyota Car Plant Altona, numerous high-rise apartment and commercial buildings. He has design experience across the sectors of high rise residential and commercial, institutional and health, industrial, domestic, sports and recreation.
Rocco’s design experience encompasses reinforced and post- tensioned concrete, precast concrete, steel design, foundations and site retention, masonry and timber structures. 
At Rincovitch Consultants, Rocco found a place where he was free to release his creative, innovative yet careful approach to structural engineering, always aligning this with how it affects the human experience.

Topic: Innovation in Building Design & How to Avoid Construction Errors
Rocco’s presentation will focus on the practical implications and considerations associated with the design of concrete walls and columns to AS 3600 – 2018. He will discuss its impact on the construction of these elements, paying particular attention to the design issues associated with precast walls and columns and their end connections.


Dr Robin Kalfat (Swinburne University)
Dr Robin Kalfat is a Senior Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology. His research interests include strengthening and rehabilitation of existing bridges using advanced composite materials, the use of nano materials such as graphene to improve the strength and durability of cementitious grouts, ground improvement using FRP anchors, protective systems to improve earthquake performance of structures and advanced numerical techniques for structural analysis.

Topic: Strengthening of vertical concrete elements - techniques and practices

Robin's presentation will cover strengthening and rehabilitation of vertical elements using traditional methods such as concrete/steel jacketing and newer techniques including fibre reinforced polymers. Repair of damaged and deteriorated elements will be considered in addition to elements which require upgrading due to increased loading.
