Our concrete module for this week highlights the significance of achieving waterproof performance of deep basements.
The webinar is presented by Dr Martin Larisch a highly respected expert on foundations and piling concrete, in his webinar “Waterproofing performance of deep basements”, Martin will cover a number of key areas related to achievement.
Martin has worked as a Civil Engineer for some of the leading ground engineering and piling companies in Germany, Australia and New Zealand and has successfully delivered numerous challenging piling, shoring and deep basement projects. In recent years, Martin has been appointed as an independent expert to provide technical and methodology advice for piling and concrete related defects. 
He obtained his University Degree in Civil Engineering in Germany, his M.Sc. in Advanced Concrete Technology in Leeds (UK) and has completed his PhD at the University of Queensland where he has been appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor. 
Martin is a Chartered Professional Engineer in Australia and New Zealand and he has published more than 25 technical papers in the field of concrete technology and foundation engineering. He was actively involved in the development of the Recommended Practice ‘Tremie Concrete for Deep foundations’ published by the CIA and the best-practice document ‘Guide for Tremie Concrete for Deep Foundations’ published by the EFFC and DFI.

Embedded retaining walls are a proven method for retention systems to structurally support deep excavations, shafts and/or basements and to form a barrier against the inflow of groundwater. Several factors need to be considered to select the most suitable wall type to comply with the project requirements and specifications. The selection of the retaining wall type offers a direct link to the expected grade of water proofing performance which is the focus of this presentation.

It should be noted that embedded retaining walls should not be assumed to be generally water tight as complete water tightness is neither practical nor economical. Even cast in-place concrete diaphragm walls with very low permeability can’t be considered completely water tight despite having the least number of vertical construction joints of all embedded retaining wall systems. British Standard BS 8102 clearly highlights the requirement of additional water proofing elements to meet the relevant water proofing levels for embedded retaining walls in general. However, unless the selected retaining wall itself provides adequate (and realistic) water retention, the performance of the additional tanking can be put at risk.

The required performance criteria for fresh tremie concrete to be used for the construction of diaphragm walls, must reach optimal concrete density to fully comply with the expected structural, durability and water proofing performance criteria of the entire basement and this presentation will discuss this topic.
