Hybrid reinforcement, a combination of traditional concrete reinforcement and steel fibres, is an alternative way to construct heavy raft foundations very efficiently.

The addition of steel fibres help to limit bending, shear and reduces crack width, which translates into significant savings over traditional reinforcement and reduces construction time. The contribution of steel fibre in concrete can be calculated by consulting the available international standards, such as the German Code ‘Steel Fibre Concrete’, an approved national annexe to the European Building Code EN 1992-1-1 (EC2). Other standards, including AS3600, are put into perspective and a brief overview of the current code developments is given. The advantages of this construction method and the basis of design are explained and exemplified by the extension of the Carl Zeiss AG production facility in Oberkochen, Germany.

1+1>2: Hybrid Reinforcement in Heavy Raft Foundations

Our presenter this week is Gerhard Vitt, he studied Structural Engineering at the TU Darmstadt, Germany, and the KTU Stockholm, Sweden. Gerhard practiced for several years as a structural engineer, after which he joined Bekaert as a Technical Manager for steel fibre concrete in 2001. Gerhard took up various international position and later assumed responsibility as Technology Manager for the Bekaert Building Products division.

Gerhard has extensive experience in the application of structural steel fibre reinforced concrete, ranging from design to execution and the implementation of quality control. He has been working as an active member of major committees for fibre reinforced concrete, such as, DAfStb, DIN, DIBt, CEN, ACI, fib or RILEM.


The webinar will run from 2.00 - 3.00pm and is based on NSW time (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Delegates will be sent login details and a password for this webinar prior to the event by email.
