About the Event
Recycled materials in concrete is a quiet phenomenon that is only now gaining ground. Innovators have been designing, testing and promoting alternative materials in concrete for years but it is only recently, with supply chain issues of traditional materials and a concentrated focus on ‘closing the loop’ that this topic is viewed with interest and, more importantly, legitimacy. If there was ever a time to develop a deeper understanding of how and where recycled materials in concrete applies to your projects, it is now.

The student concrete competition is a fun learning experience for the next generation of engineers. This year the competition requires students to predict the load capacity and failure mode of a concrete frame element. Teams of 2-5 student will compete for first prize of $500.

Professor Rebecca Gravina, BEng, PhD, FIEAUST, MASCE, CPEng, NER (RMIT)

Rebecca Gravina is Professor of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Professor Gravina obtained her PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Adelaide and prior to joining RMIT, she worked as a consulting Civil Engineer with ARUP. She has over 20 years of experience in academia and consulting engineering. Her research field concerns the long-term performance and durability of reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PC) structures, sustainability of infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing structures with fibre reinforced polymers (FRP), recycled materials in concrete, and engineering education. She is the co-author of the textbook Prestressed Concrete by Warner, Foster and Gravina; she has published more than 90 research papers and has won numerous competitive research grants and teaching awards. Professor Gravina has been appointed Theme Leader for the Sustainability Research Program of the Smartcrete CRC (2020-2027).
