Crumb Rubber Concrete (CRC), where the rubber partially replaces sand in the concrete, has become quite a popular topic in concrete materials research in the past 10 years due to its sustainability and environmentally friendly impacts. Nevertheless, the practicality of this concrete class in the concrete industry market at present is very limited. This webinar focuses on utilizing crumb rubber from end-of-life tyres in concrete through to its intended use for residential construction sector – a huge market.

Presentation title:  Reinforced Crumb Rubber Concrete for Construction
The presentation focuses on utilizing crumb rubber from end-of-life tyres in concrete intended for residential construction sector. Design and testing of CRC at three strength grades (20 MPa, 25 MPa, and 32 MPa) were carried out.  In addition to the intensive laboratory testing program which includes shrinkage, compressive, flexural and tensile strengths, modulus of elasticity, structure deformation, fresh and hardened density, edge dampness effect, carbonation effect, surface abrasion, chloride effect, corrosion development, and water sorptivity, two large-scale reinforced concrete residential slabs were also constructed, each 4 m × 9 m, with an edge beam and one internal beam across the short dimension. One was cast with CRC and the other with a standard residential mix of conventional concrete. Both mixes were provided by a commercial ready-mix company and the construction was undertaken by an experienced footing contractor.  The results to date show that CRC in residential slabs is a promising and potentially viable alternative to conventional concrete.
Presented by: Dr Yan Zhuge is a Professor in Structural Engineering at UniSA STEM, University of South Australia
Yan has lectured in several Australian universities for more than 20 years. She has a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Structural Engineering from Beijing, China, a PhD in Structural Engineering from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. Prof Zhuge’s main research interests include green concrete materials, composite materials and structures and seismic retrofitting of structures. She has published more than 200 SCI technical papers in the referred international journals and conferences and has been invited as a keynote speaker at several international conferences. Yan has won several Australian government awards and fellowships and attracted funding from Australian Research council and industry. She was the winner of 2018 South Australia Government Winnovation award in Engineering category.
