Dr. Warren South - Chief Executive Officer (SmartCrete CRC) has worked in the heavy construction materials industry for over 25 years. He started his working career in cement in 1985 with Blue Circle Southern Cement at Berrima as Assistant Works Chemist, later to become Works Chemist in 1989. During this time he worked on the development of cement and concretes specifically for high durability applications such as the immersed tube units for the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and other important infrastructure projects.

Title of presentation - Overview of SmartCrete CRC: current progress and future planned developments.

Since gaining funding from the Commonwealth in early 2020, SmartCrete CRC has grown into a functioning entity focussed on delivering improvements in the application of concrete in infrastructure.

Internal processes for funding approvals are maturing to the point where we have identified three projects for initial funding, We have a further portfolio of projects which with some refinement of the proposals will be put forward for funding. The company has partnered with nearly 40 companies and organisations to examine industry issues and challenges, and to facilitate a network of researchers to support the solutions to these problems.

Biography
In 1996, he moved to New Zealand to become Technical Manager for Golden Bay Cement. During this time he led the development of cements specifically for use in the South Pacific, dealing with three different Standards regimes also lead the development of inorganic polymer binders for concrete.

Moving back to Australia, he gained his doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Wollongong in 2010, dealing with the performance of cements based on natural pozzolanic materials available in New Zealand, the outcomes of which are seeing commercial reality.

Warren was previously the Director – Research and Technology for the industry organisation -Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia. He maintains an active focus on addressing sustainability and resilience in terms of the cement and concrete industry and is a strong advocate for the positive contributions that concrete can make to the durability of the built environment.

Warren is also an Associate Professor (Honorary) in Civil Engineering at the University of Wollongong, Adjunct Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Technology – Sydney, and a member of the National Council of the Concrete Institute of Australia.

Rebecca Gravina is Professor of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.

Title of presentation: Recycled Waste in Concrete for Municipal Applications
This presentation will provide an overview of the Smartcrete CRC project to investigate and implement new applications of domestic and industrial waste materials (plastics, rubber, crusher dust, industrial by-products) in the concrete construction industry. Long term environmental and economic benefits to key stakeholders: supply-chain, government, and asset owners, will be further investigated. The project is a strategic response to the demand-supply imbalance in infrastructure and waste recovery sector with a primary focus on councils and local municipalities.

Biography
Professor Gravina obtained her PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Adelaide and prior to joining RMIT, she worked as a consulting Civil Engineer with ARUP. She has over 20 years of experience in academia and consulting engineering. Her research field concerns the long-term performance and durability of reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PC) structures, sustainability of infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing structures with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP), recycled materials in concrete, and engineering education. Professor Gravina is the co-author of the textbook 'Prestressed Concrete' by Warner, Foster and Gravina, she has published more than 90 research papers, has won numerous competitive research grants and teaching awards. Professor Gravina has been appointed Theme Leader for the Sustainability Research Program of the Smartcrete CRC (2020-2027).
